A big update this week for our fellow West Angelenos: we all got one step closer to a taste of the distant and delicious world beyond the 405, as the third installation of Night + Market, the popular Northern Thai restaurant from celebrated Los Angeles chef, Kris Yenbamroong, now has a sign above the door of their new Venice location.
It’s a promising stake in the ground that has been more than a year and half in the making. Longer if you consider the Venice spot was originally pegged for the second N+M addition.
But the official story takes us back to May, when it was reported that Yenbamroong would be opening his third Night + Market location – Night + Market Sahm (Sahm meaning “three” in Thai) – on the corner of Lincoln Blvd and Grant Ave on June 28, 2016. At that time, the expectation was an experience and menu that was mostly distinct from the restaurant’s other two locations, in WeHo and Silver Lake.
Soon there was a push back to August, then all went quiet. Fast-forward to May of this year, when the purchase of an additional adjacent office and parking got things moving again for Yenbamroong, followed by a new frenzy of coverage in just the last week, with a Bird Journal article divulging the chef’s ultimate change of heart and decision to stay true to the established Night + Market offering and design, along with interior photos to prove it. And finally, in the most tangible manifestation to us commuters inching up and down Highway 1, came the glorious sign. The location is scheduled to open mid- to late January, 2018.
This is a huge deal for us Westsiders. Angelenos (maybe us Westsiders in particular) are not big on leaving our immediate hoods. To underscore the point as only ex-New Yorkers can, we can honestly tell you we’d sooner go from Williamsburg to Crown Heights by train and make the pilgrimage Silver Lake. West Hollywood: barely more likely.
But the new location is critical for another reason: while Abbot Kinney and even Washington may be resplendent with hot, trendy food and drink selections, Night + Market comes to a stretch we’d argue is about as lush and inspiring as an abandoned coal mine. That is, save one lone hot, trendy bar that for the past twenty months has been begging for a great restaurant within walking distance at which to pre-game, or to recover by way greasy noodles. And that bar, The Lincoln, just happens to be 100 feet away, directly across the street from Night + Market Sahm.
So better pencil in those date nights now. We damn sure will – we’ve literally been given a sign.
